MET Laptop Policy

Students in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program are required to purchase a laptop computer for use in their courses.  Below are the recommended specifications for laptops capable of running the necessary software.

Note:  Apple computers are NOT endorsed; the bulk of the software used in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program is Microsoft Windows based.  If you bring an Apple computer to class, our faculty as well as technology staff will not be responsible for assisting you with the intensive setup that may be required.

As per Solidworks Requirements:

  • Intel i5 CPU or better
  • 8GB RAM; 16GB recommended.
  • 2GB free disk space; 5GB recommended.
  • 2GB or more GPU RAM; 4GB recommended.
  • NVIDIA® graphics card: NVIDIA Quadro®/NVIDIA GeForce®/Tesla™ with at least NVIDIA Kepler™ chip;
  • Dual-GPU setup with at least NVIDIA Maxwell™ cards for the best experience

Student Responsibility for Computers, Software and Maintenance

It is the responsibility of the student to purchase, set up, and maintain their laptops and software required for their coursework.  University Information Technology Services (uits.iu.edu) is available to assist students with some computer-related technical issues; however students must take provisions to back up their work and seek out alternatives in the event that their computer fails, must be repaired, is lost, or stolen.
