BS in Biomedical Engineering

BS in Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering is a vibrant and rapidly expanding field both in content and opportunities. As our technological infrastructure expands and our fundamental knowledge in the life sciences is now at the basic molecular level, Biomedical Engineers are poised to continue to make major advances.

How to Apply

Students are eligible to enter the Biomedical Engineering program when they have satisfied their freshman prerequisites and are ready to begin Introductory Biomechanics (BME 24101 lecture and BME 24300 lab). In order to be eligible to move from Freshman Engineering to BME, students must:

  • Submit a brief application and faculty recommendation form, both also available from the BME department (SL220). This application should be submitted to the BME department (electronically or to SL 220) by April 1 in the academic year prior to enrolling in Introductory Biomechanics (typically the second semester of the freshman year).
  • Pass their freshman prerequisite classes (ENGR 125 196, 197; MATH 165, 166, 171; PHYS 152; CHEM-C 105, 125 and either 106 or BIOL-K 101) with grades of C or higher with a program GPA in these courses of 2.5 or higher.

The BME program has thus far been able to accommodate all interested students who satisfy these minimum requirements. As interest in the program grows, however, the application process may become more competitive.

Program Educational Objectives

The program educational objectives of our biomedical engineering undergraduate program are to integrate engineering and life science principles into a comprehensive curriculum that produces graduates who can achieve the following career and professional accomplishments, if desired:

  • Meet employer expectations in medical device companies or other health or life science related industries.
  • Pursue and complete advanced graduate degrees in biomedical engineering, or related engineering or life science areas.
  • Pursue and complete advanced professional degree programs in medicine, law, business, or other professional areas.

The above program objectives are based on achieving a set of assessable program outcomes at the time the students have completed the undergraduate curriculum and are outlined below.

BME Student Outcomes

Upon completing the undergraduate BME degree, our students will possess:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgement to draw conclusions
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
