Student Achievements

Andrea Jacobson (BS BME ’23)Top 10 Recipient Summer 2022: I plan to be working as an engineering intern at Roche. While gaining experience in industry and research as a biomedical engineer, I also make sure to dedicate time in my week to the organization I founded, the Domestic Abuse Prevention Student Organization (DAPSO) here at IUPUI. To fulfill our mission supporting survivors and victims of domestic abuse, we volunteer with Coburn Place and Children's Bureau. 
Ishita Bhedi (BS BME ’23) Top 100 Recipient Summer 2022: Drug Discovery and Development Intern at the Medicine Innovations Hub- Eli Lilly and Company.  Being an International Student, I wanted to make the best out of the 4 years of college and hence I am honored to be a part of the Top 100. Over the course of 3 years, I have had an opportunity to be part of numerous leadership experiences including the Regatta, work with the Life Health Science Internship for a Radiation Oncology Lab that deals with ovarian cancer, and devote my time to service-learning by volunteering at the Coburn Place through the Domestic Abuse Prevention Student Organization.
Karan Bhula (BS BME ’23, MS BME ’24) Top 100 Recipient Summer 2022: Karan is seeking an internship in medicine or engineering facilities to make new connections with other students or faculty members. I also plan on taking a few business classes during the summer to get my business minor by the time I graduate. I am grateful for receiving the IUPUI Top 100 award, and I would like to give credit to all of my professors, family members, and gods, who have guided me in building a versatile repertoire of skills, looking out for my community, and staying true to my curious self.
Kaitlyn Colglazier (BS BME ’23) Top 100 Recipient Summer 2022: (IN)SCRIBE Program Scholar - IUPUI The first research lab I worked at as a freshman during my fall semester supported me greatly throughout the past couple of years and with receiving top 100. They were willing to write me letters of recommendation, giving me experience as an underclassman, and providing opportunities such as presenting a study at the ORS conference.
Isaac Demaree (BS BME ’22) Top 100 Recipient Summer 2022: Taking a [well-deserved] break before medical school. I will be attending the IU School of Medicine in Indy this coming August. I am excited to start medical school in a city that means so much to me, and I hope to stay involved in BME while I am pursuing the next step in my education. Receiving this award causes me to reflect on and to be grateful for all of the opportunities I have had during my time at IUPUI. I have really grown these last four years and am excited and ready to take what I have learned with me as I move on to what's next.
Tim Hostetler (BS BME ’22, MS BME ‘23) Top 100 Recipient Summer 2022: I will be working as a design engineer for Arcamed and then I will be returning for one additional year to complete my Masters degree. Receiving this award is a great honor for me and a recognition of my efforts outside of the classroom. This is my 4th year in Jagathon raising money for Riley Hospital for Children and has been a wonderful extracurricular experience for me.
Ashtin Wilson (BS BME ’22, MS BME ’23) Top 100 Recipient Summer 2022: I will be earning my Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering through IUPUI's 5 Year MS/BS BME program and working as a Clinical Specialist in Medtronic's Cardiac Rhythm Heart Failure sector. What an incredible honor to end my undergraduate career as a Top 100 Student. IUPUI has helped me open more doors than I ever could’ve dreamed and it has been my pleasure to give back through service, research, involvement, and academics.
Ivette Muzquiz (MS BME '21) Ivette reviewed the 2021 Distinguished Master's Thesis Award for her work: “Reversible Nerve Conduction Block Using Low-Frequency Alternating Currents”. This involved the exploration of a phenomenon involving nerve conduction block elicited using direct nerve electrical stimulation using a novel stimulation waveform. Her thesis work directly resulted in four conference papers and presentations, and two journal publications.  
Genevieve Carney (BS BME '23) Genevieve is currently working at Catalent Biologics in Bloomington, Indiana as a Validation co-op. she has had three rotations under equipment validation, quality engineering, and continuous improvement. Through these rotations, Genevieve has had the opportunity to work to decrease downtime in COVID-19 manufacturing production. lead a team of technicians, assess possible failure modes of equipment, and implement process improvements. Through her time at Catalent, Genevieve has had the opportunity to meet 1:1  and gain perspective from individuals throughout the company.
BME's First (IN)SCRIBE Scholars This summer, several of the BME department's undergraduate students had the opportunity to identify community healthcare needs and challenges through clinical immersion, needs development, and design solutions. Check out this article for more on the (IN)SCRIBE program.
Cayla Skaggs (BS BME '20, MS BME '21) Over the summer, Cayla Skaggs had the opportunity to intern with Eli Lilly and Company. While in Cayla’s Fort Wayne home, she was able to work on three, unique, one-week projects over the 6-week internship.  Cayla was able to cross-functionally collaborate in a dynamic projects with a presentation at the end of each week. The projects included topics such as fluid and heat transfer problems, material flow in buildings, and optimization of a patient experience with a Lilly device.  Cayla has accepted a full-time position at Eli Lilly and Company starting in the summer of 2021.
