The IUPUI Music Academy within the Department of Music and Arts Technology (MAT) is dedicated to engaging IUPUI students, faculty, and surrounding neighborhoods in meaningful, community-based music experiences. Established in 1996, the Academy’s original mission focused on testing and teaching music-based technologies, but over the years, its operations have migrated to offering primarily individualized music lessons taught by contracted teachers.
With the exciting growth in MAT’s degree programs and the new music therapy undergraduate program, MAT faculty have started a strategic planning process that will realign Music Academy programs with MAT academic degrees. It is important to emphasize that the Academy has not been terminated, but its current one-on-one music lesson offerings have been scaled back as the Academy undergoes redesign. For example, current offerings for the community are limited to the Adult String Ensembles (Beginning and Advanced), Girls Rock camp, and collaborating with the Upward Bound Summer Academy (Upward Bound assists IPS high school students prepare for college).
The new, innovative programs that we anticipate the Academy will offer in the near future will leverage MAT faculty and student expertise in music recording, electroacoustic music, and music as a therapeutic modality, providing opportunities for deeper engagement of faculty and students with the community. Thus, the Music Academy will offer a combination of traditional and technology-based group music experiences for youth and adults to improve creativity and overall sense of wellness.
