Dr. Euzeli C. dos Santos Jr. (above, left) and Dr. John Lee (above, right), professors with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the School of Engineering and Technology, have been awarded the grant for the Research Experience for Undergraduates in High Efficiency Computing program. The grant will fund this summer program over the next three years and has an option to renew for six more years.
In addition to dos Santos Jr. and Lee, four other IUPUI faculty members from various disciplines will conduct the program, including Zina Ben Miled, Mohamed El-Sharkawy, Brian King and Maher Rizkalla. Students will be challenged to develop software solutions that do not look exclusively at performance but also include other parameters such as efficiency and losses. From a hardware perspective, they will work with the development of high efficiency power supplies. Participants will work with industry mentors throughout the program.
“One of the benefits of IUPUI’s urban campus is our proximity to major companies and organizations,” said dos Santos Jr. “Some of our industry partners will work with students and offer site visits during the program.”
While some participants will be IUPUI students, others will be from out-of-state, minority-serving institutions that don’t offer a research program in electrical and computer engineering. Students will receive meals, housing and a stipend for the 10-week summer program. Those who complete the program also will receive a NSF-sponsored program certificate.
