This is a multidisciplinary course emphasizing sustainability, globalization, and German culture. Students will visit industries, businesses, universities, and municipalities to see sustainable practices in Germany, such as like, Roche and MVV Energy. We also visit Speyer, Freiburg, Ladenburg, Heidelberg, and Schwetzingen. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to visit a number of facilities in Indianapolis to compare information gathered in Germany.
Supplementary Activities in Germany
Students will have evenings and some late afternoons to explore Mannheim, Heidelberg, Ladenburg, and/or other close cities or towns. Heidelberg and Ladenburg can be reached via a short tram or train ride from Mannheim. An important part of this class is learning about the German culture. This time should be used for students to explore the culture, history, and hospitality of Germany.
When is the Trip?
March 5-May 5 – Spring late start online coursework
April 5 & April 19 – Required meeting on campus; 11AM – 5PM each day
May 23-29 – Mannheim, Germany*
June 22 – Required Zoom meeting* Note: You must be in Germany on May 23 through May 29. Therefore, your flight leaving the U.S. cannot be later than May 22, and you cannot leave Mannheim until May 30.
How Do I Sign Up?
Interested students MUST complete the following steps:

- Obtain permission to register for OLS 42300 – Go Green or OLS 56300 – Sustainable Practices in Business and Industry in the European Union
- Ensure you have a current passport in hand by 10/31/23!!

What is the course?
Undergraduate Course: OLS 42300 – Go Green
This is an interdisciplinary course emphasizing sustainability, globalization, and an international culture experience. In this context, sustainability refers to design, engineering, manufacturing, technology and leadership processes implemented and maintained in industry and business for the purpose of being environmentally responsible, energy efficient, cost effective, and socially responsible.
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Acquire knowledge of issues in sustainability (interdisciplinary area) as it relates to business and industry internationally and nationally.
2. Acquire some knowledge and appreciation of German culture and some language skills.
3. Utilize, analyze, and synthesize sustainable knowledge from course to apply in life upon return to U.S.
4. Understand and analyze the interconnectivity of global concerns.
Graduate Course: OLS 56300 – Sustainable Practices in Business and Industry in the European Union – The graduate course is taught with the undergraduate GO GREEN study abroad course (OLS 42300 and/or OLS 20000). The class dates are the same and costs for the program are the same, except for the tuition. The assignments are different for the graduate course. Graduate Course Description:
This course examines and critically assesses sustainable practices in businesses, industries, and/or municipalities in Germany or France. Students will spend one week in Marseille, France or Mannheim, Germany visiting, touring, and analyzing businesses, industries, or municipalities on their sustainable practices. In addition, to learning about the organization’s sustainable practices, students will also learn about their specific country’s culture and some language skills.
Graduate General Course Learning Outcomes:
- Acquire knowledge of issues in sustainability (interdisciplinary area) as it relates to business and industry internationally and nationally.
- Identify and describe trends and business practices in various sustainable organizations.
- Utilize, analyze, and synthesize sustainable knowledge from course to apply in life upon return to U.S.
- Acquire knowledge and appreciation of German culture and some language skills.
- Understand and analyze the interconnectivity of global concerns.
What is Included in the Cost?
In addition to the three-credit hour tuition fee for the course, there will be a charge of a flat fee of $650. This fee will be used for class materials, weekly tram pass, museum passes, tour guide fees, train fare for the week, a welcoming and farewell dinner, and several lunches. In addition, IUPUI International Programs office charges a $90.00 fee (estimated) for all study abroad courses.
Estimated cost of room and transportation
The estimated cost of the roundtrip airfare from Indianapolis to Frankfurt, Germany or another comparable German city is generally less than $1000.00 (can be between $700 and $900). The estimated cost of a round trip train ticket to Mannheim from Frankfurt is $80.00. Sharing a room with another student is the cheapest way for accommodations; the cost would be approximately $70 per night if shared or cheaper if students choose Airbnb or hostel option. Meals in Mannheim are estimated to cost $400 or less. There is a $35 mandatory fee for insurance. A student would need at least approximately $3,400 or more for the trip in addition to the tuition. See estimates below. Some of the cost of the trip can be offset by scholarships (see scholarship below).

You can split the cost and share rooms with other students traveling with the GO GREEN class. Many students are now staying in Airbnb apartments which are even cheaper than hotels. |

Scholarships for Engineering and Technology Students
The School of Engineering and Technology has several scholarships for ET students, in addition IUPUI has a scholarship for study abroad students– see below:
Yurtseven Scholarship – Only available to students in the School of Engineering and Technology who are planning to study abroad during the calendar year. Amounts vary, but typically cover between $500 - $1,000 per selected student. For more information, see https://et.iupui.edu/students/scholarships/
Engineering & Technology Honors Program Travel Grant - The purpose of the Travel Grant is to help Honors Program students participate in a Study Abroad experience or a conference in their area of study. ONLY Engineering & Technology Honors Program Students can apply. IUPUI Honors College scholars are not eligible even if they are Engineering & Technology Students. Begeman Scholarship – The Begeman Study Abroad scholarships are available on the Department’s Bepko Awards Ceremony application, which will be available for students to apply on October 2nd – December 31st. – check with your department. Scholarship recipients will be chosen by the E&T School Scholarship Committee and honored at the Bepko Awards Ceremony in April. The criteria for the scholarship includes: support for undergraduate students enrolled in the School of Engineering and Technology who are participating in an IU-approved (which includes this list above), credit-bearing overseas study abroad program as part of an educational experience for a semester, academic year, or summer study. Recipients will have a record of academic excellence as determined by the Scholarship Committee. Preference will be given to students who are from Indiana, Ohio, or Pennsylvania. International Project-Based Learning Travel Grants – Only available to students who plan to participate in approved programs that offer service or project-based learning. Financial Aid
The program fee will be billed to your Bursar account for the Spring semester. You can use any source of funds (financial aid, grants, external scholarships, etc.) that you can apply to your Bursar bill to help offset the cost of the trip.
