The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with basic history, styles, and trends in hip hop, with a focus on the music. Students will attain essential knowledge of artists, producers, and events critical to the development of hip hop as a culture.

 Demonstrate an understanding of the history and styles of hip-hop music.

 Comprehend that hip-hop is a culture, not a music.

 Provide discourse on former and current trends in hip-hop.

 Demonstrate through presentations and projects the ability to apply concepts of hip-hop music to topics both inside and outside of hip-hop.

 Complete the assignments and projects required for the class.
