Who needs academic advising?
- Everyone! The main goal of advising is to help you routinely take inventory of your academic progress and career plans, ensuring that you are on the right path to maximize success in your education and future career.
- Holds -- You must meet with the ECE Department advisor before registering if you have one of these Engineering & Technology holds on your record. You can check your holds in the Student Center:
- V00: Academic Probation with impact
- V03: Advising
- V05: Administrative
- V06: Academic Probation
- Permission for a class -- You must meet with the ECE Department advisor before registering for one of these courses:
- ECE 20200 - Academic progress review required
- ECE 30200 - Academic progress review required
- ECE 48700 - Academic progress review required; submission of Official Plan of Study required
When is a good time for academic advising?
- After the registrar releases the semester class schedule, but before your priority registration date is the best time to plan your schedule.
- Plan ahead! Don’t wait until the end of a semester or two or three weeks before the beginning of the next semester. It is a very busy time for everyone, and your classes may already be full.
How do I prepare for an advising appointment?
- Review your EE or CmpE plan of study (POS) and your Academic Advising Report (AAR).
- Double check the courses you need.
- Verify pre- and co-requisite courses.
- Make a list of classes you plan to take.
- Spring-only courses are ECE 25500, 20800, 28200, and 38200
- Fall-only courses are ECE 31100, 36500, and 44000, and ME 29500 (Engr Mech & Heat).
- Make a note of questions and concerns.

- ECE 69311 Internship * see Sherrie for the required documentation/form, you must obtain approval from Dr. Maher Rizkalla with approval to all internships.
- ECE 69600 Special Projects *see Sherrie for the required form, you must have signed approval form the faculty member you are doing the Special Project.
- ECE 69800 Thesis *be sure to copy your faculty thesis advisor on the email request.
- ECE 69900 Dissertation *be sure to copy your faculty dissertation advisor on the email request.
- Any Course outside the department (this excludes the Math courses).
- Anyone who needs help in determining their course(s) to select or are in need of other departmental graduate advising.

- If you have a copy of your POS, bring this to your appointment.
- Bring a copy of your IUPUI unofficial transcript.
- Review the next semester course offerings.
- Make a list of classes you plan to take. Bring this to your appointment.

- Face-to-face advising
- Required for your first appointment with the ECE Graduate Chair (V03 Advising hold)
- Required if you have an advising, administrative, or probation hold (V03 Advising Hold, V05 Administrative or V06 Academic Probation).
- E-advising
- Required if you need permission to register for ECE 69311, ECE 69600, ECE 69800, ECE 69900 or requesting to take a course outside the department. (Include your University ID number, course number/section & name of the professor.
- For your convenience, you can request a phone appointment or email your questions for many issues.
- Include your University ID number for all e-advising.
- Use your official university email only.
- Walk-in advising ~ specific times onlywatch for the email for walk-in advising times.
- Limited to 10 minutes each.
- Walk-in is on a "first come, first served" basis.
- Walk-in advising is for short, specific questions. Anytime you prefer a face-to-face advising meeting that will take longer than 10 minutes, you will need to schedule an appointment in advance.
