Quantitative Physiology in BME

BME 41101/ 4 Cr.

This course is an introductory course in physiological systems and an introductory course in classical feedback control theory for biomedical engineers.  It aims to apply systems theory and classical feedforward and feedback control in the context of physiological.  Control, frequency response, and linear systems concepts are applied to action potential generation, motor control, heart rate regulation, and other physiological processes.  Approximately a third of the course will be devoted to physiological systems, as third to classical control theory and a third to the application of classical control and systems theory to physiological systems.

Instruction Goal

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

• Describe major physiological features the neuromuscular, cardiac, pulmonary, and renal systems. [1]
• Analyze, reduce and implement a dynamic in-silico model of a Plant (standard engineering systems and physiological systems) using linear systems theory descriptors in the frequency and state-space domains. [2,6]
• Analyze the characteristics of the linearized Plant model and design a classical feedback controller . [1,2]
• Define specifications of the normal operation of a system in nominal operation.
• Analyze the system stability of a Plant. [1]
• Analyze frequency response and construct Bode plots. [1,]
• Work in teams to understand and implement a model of a physiological system. [2,3,5]
• Group project work and reporting [3, 5]
